Here at AJG Direct we get a lot of graduates coming to us and wanting to join the team. One of the philosophies that I teach them is that how you invest your time is equally (if not more) as important as how you invest your money.
In the same way that you invest money in order to get a return, time works in exactly the same way. There are certain things that we can spend our time on that will give us a guaranteed return on in the future.
In today’s article I’m going to share with you the five best time investments that me and my team invest in that have enabled us to reach the level of success we’ve got to.
Invest in learning Sales
The sales profession gets a lot of bad press. A lot of us assume that salespeople are manipulative and only out to take from your wallet.
This isn’t the case at all.
Great salespeople know that in order to sell correctly you need to listen to the person that you’re selling to. You need to understand this person’s emotions and needs and be able to deliver something to them that they are going to value.
At the end of the day it’s all about communication.
Learning how to communicate effectively, so that both parties walk away from the interaction satisfied is a skill that will help you in your personal life, in your career, and in every single interactionthat have with another human being.
Once you know how to sell, the rest of your life becomes that much easier. You’ll be able to notice how your words and actions impact those around you and adjust to make every interaction have a better outcome.
Invest in becoming a Leader
The ability to motivate, inspire, and get people reach their goals is the essence of leadership. It’s such a powerful time investment because, once mastered, there’s nothing in this world that you can’t achieve.
When it gets down to it, if you’re an ambitious person with big dreams, you need a team behind you in order to make that dream a reality. Without a team you’re going to be stuck in the same cycle that you’ve always been in.
If you can’t lead you’re limiting how fast and how far you’re going to go in life.
Once you invest in being a leader and develop that skill you’re going to open up countless opportunities in your life because you’ll be able to understand what makes other people tick. You’ll beable to empower them to reach their own goals and in return they’ll do everything in their power to help build your vision.
Invest in Mentoring
This goes two ways; find people to mentor and bring to your level and find others that play at a higher level and get them to help you reach theirs.
Being a mentor is hugely rewarding because you’re focus is on helping others grow as a person. You’ll also become better at whatever it is that you’re mentoring the other person on because you’ll be forced to put into words exactly how and why you do things the way you do. This will massively increase your understanding of your craft or profession because you’ll think more critically about your mistakes and what they’ve taught you.
Similarly, finding a mentor will enable you to progress at a much faster rate. Your mentor will have made more mistakes so can show you how to avoid them. They’ll be able to confidently share with you what they’ve found effective and give you clarity on what your next move needs to be.
Invest in learning Time Management
Time is the most valuable resource that we have. Unfortunately, you can’t “make more” time in the same way you can with money. This is why learning time management is one of the best time investments you can make.
Time management consists of two core parts; using your time effectively, and making sure you have time to do the things that are important.
You need to know how to make effective use of your time so that you can operate efficiently. 30 minutes of pure focussed work can get more results than eight hours of unfocussed work. The same goes for play, if you’re unable to “switch off” and focus on whatever it is that you’re doing. The time spent is wasted because you’ll be distracted from what you’re doing.
Similarly, you need to be able to find time to do everything that you want to do. This isn’t an easy task. For those of you that pulled all-nighters to get that essay finished will know what I’m talking about. By chunking your time effectively and planning properly you’ll be able to find the time to stay physically healthy, progress in your career, and still have the time to recharge.
Invest in Money Management
Money isn’t everything, but not having money is one of the most stressful things that can happen to us. We’re taught that a love of money is wrong, but the truth is that you need to love money in order for it to work for you.
You need to love money in the same way you’d love a parent or partner; with respect. The sales and marketing profession is fantastic at enabling you to earn a lot of money, but it’s not what you earn that matters; it’s what you keep.
Investing in learning how to use your money effectively will make it so that you’ll always be able to afford whatever it is that you want. You’re going to remove the stress of that the end-of-the-month gives a lot of people.
By understanding how budgeting works, howto invest properly, and how to use money effectively, you’re going to hit that dream lifestyle and continue to live that lifestyle much faster than those of us that haven’t put in the hours into learning that skill.
So, what’s next?
As I mentioned earlier, time is the most valuable resource. As a graduate it feels like you have unlimited time, but you don’t. The sooner that you start properly investing your time the sooner you’re going to be able to live the life that you want to live.
The five best time investments for graduates again are:
- Sales: Effective communication will enable you to positively interact with everyone around you
- Leadership: If you have big goals (and you should) you’re going to need a team to help you. Without leadership no one’s going to buy into your vision
- Mentoring: Teaching others will give you a much deeper understanding of your craft and finding a mentor will help you become a master far faster than making all the mistakes by yourself
- Time Management: Most of us waste a huge amount of time simply because we haven’t invested in learning how to be more effective with the time that we’ve been given
- Money Management: Money is a great tool that will enable you to do whatever your life goals are. Learning how to save, invest, and spend properly will give you the ability to move much faster and live with a lot less stress
